Clarification from Former Members of the National Conference Steering Committee

In a statement published this Monday, former members of the National Conference Steering Committee sought to clarify their role and responsibilities within the framework of the Haitian constitutional process.
They immediately affirmed their support for any initiative aimed at strengthening transparency in the management of public funds, but recalled that they were in no way responsible for state expenditures. According to the decree of July 17, 2024, they specified, financial management was not within their purview. Funds allocated to the Committee's activities were administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in accordance with current procedures and under government supervision. The former members also emphasized that they had submitted all work reports related to the constitutional question, specifying that the draft Constitution has already been deposited. They insisted that their mandate did not include organizing a referendum, a responsibility that therefore did not fall to them. While reaffirming their respect for the different opinions expressed regarding the constitutional project, they called for not minimizing the collective efforts of the many personalities and organizations that contributed to this vast reform process. Finally, the statement recalled that the work continues through two parallel initiatives: the implementation of a new societal project and institutional and legal reform, presented as essential for the rebuilding of the Haitian state.
