OUAGADOUGOU.— A night of tension gripped Burkina Faso following an attempt to destabilize its institutions. A coup d'état, targeting the Burkinabe leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, was foiled on the night of Saturday, January 3, 2026, thanks to the intervention of the defense and security forces, according to several converging sources from the capital.
According to information relayed by local media, the aborted operation directly targeted the President of the Transition, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. The rapid response of the security forces reportedly led to the arrest of the main suspect, presented as the alleged mastermind of the plot, bringing an end to the endeavor before it could be carried out.
Analysis of the arrested suspect's phone reportedly revealed elements deemed highly compromising by investigators. These discoveries are said to have led to further arrests. According to the same sources, several individuals suspected of complicity, including economic operators, have been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.
Alleged Planning from Abroad
Still according to this information, the destabilization attempt was reportedly planned from Lomé, Togo, and involved known figures. The name of Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, former President of the Burkinabe Transition, is frequently mentioned. Based in Togo since his ousting from power, he allegedly coordinated the operation in conjunction with internal contacts, according to these sources.
The aborted plan reportedly included the assassination of the drone base commander, a maneuver intended to weaken the national security apparatus. This action was meant to facilitate the infiltration of mercenaries and armed terrorist groups positioned outside the territory, with the objective of targeting strategic state installations.
Youth Mobilization in Ouagadougou Following the Attempt
Following the dissemination of the information, a spontaneous mobilization of youth was observed in the capital. Many young people gathered near the presidential palace to express their support for Captain Ibrahim Traoré and their commitment to the transition process. Patriotic slogans and messages in favor of national sovereignty were chanted, in a generally calm but determined atmosphere.
For several observers, this mobilization reflects the adherence of a segment of the population, particularly the youth, to the head of state's political line. Since coming to power, Captain Ibrahim Traoré has enjoyed significant support among young Burkinabe, who are receptive to his sovereignist discourse and his stated desire to break with certain past practices.
Suspicions of External Support in a Tense Security Context
Some sources also mention alleged external support, claiming that Western countries had promised logistical and aerial backing to facilitate a regime change. These allegations have not, at this stage, received any official confirmation.
It should be noted that this aborted attempt occurs in a national and regional context marked by strong instability. Burkina Faso continues to face major security challenges related to the fight against terrorism, as well as persistent political tensions since the beginning of the transition. The episode reignites the debate on the solidity of institutions and the need for broad national consensus to guarantee the country's stability.
At this stage, no official communication has been released by the Burkinabe authorities. Local media indicate they are closely monitoring the situation's evolution and are committed to informing the public as confirmed elements become available.
