Published by Sucrier editions, in Martinique, Closed Circuit is a 48-page comic book by Francisco Silva, in collaboration with Junjazz Hope. Born from a long-term effort initiated during the «peyi lòk», this work aims to be both an artistic creation and a heartfelt cry about the sociopolitical situation in Haiti.
A Metaphor for Haitian Traffic Jams
Inspired by the phenomenon of traffic jams in the streets of Port-au-Prince, Closed Circuit offers a symbolic reading of Haitian society: a nation paralyzed by political, economic, and cultural blockages, where nothing seems to move forward.
Francisco Silva thus transforms urban reality into a visual plea, a way of saying that the country is caught in a gigantic social “gridlock,” maintained by privileged groups acting in their own interests. The message is strong: despite the crisis and stagnation, there is a glimmer of hope. One day, these obstacles will give way to a better tomorrow, provided there is courage and faith in the future.
A Contribution to Haitian Youth Literature
Through this project, Francisco Silva chooses the comic strip as an artistic form of expression to reach Haitian youth. He thus intends to address a real need: the lack of local works in the youth literature category. By blending visual art, narration, and social reflection, Closed Circuit establishes itself as an educational and cultural tool that invites young people to think about their society while opening themselves to reading and artistic creation.
A Path Paved with Obstacles
The author does not hide the difficulties encountered during the conception of the work. The country's situation, marked by instability and insecurity, profoundly affected his artistic creativity. Francisco Silva notably mentions the lack of exhibitions, travel problems, and the impossibility of organizing artistic workshops.
Nevertheless, he showed resilience and perseverance to successfully complete this demanding project, meeting the quality standards set by his publishing house.
An Opening Towards the Future
If a second volume is planned, its realization will depend on the evolution of the situation in Haiti. The author especially hopes to organize a book signing for the first volume in the country, to bring the work closer to its natural audience. For now, Closed Circuit is available in Martinique, France, Canada, and Africa, testifying to the growing influence of Haitian comic books on the Francophone scene.
With Closed Circuit, Francisco Silva offers a work that is both poetic and political, a mirror of the national crisis but also an invitation to hope. In a country plagued by doubt, his message remains clear: even in the longest traffic jams, the road always eventually clears.
