PORT-AU-PRINCE. — Toussaint Louverture International Airport welcomed about twenty deportees from the Guantánamo naval base this Tuesday around 12:05 PM. This repatriation comes shortly after the American administration denied allegations of a massive transfer of undocumented migrants to this military facility before their expulsion.
Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary, stated on X that « this will not happen », assuring that the sending of thousands of migrants to Guantánamo was not being considered, despite ongoing preparations to accommodate up to 30,000 migrants there, in accordance with a directive from former President Donald Trump.
Furthermore, Stephen Miller, Senior Advisor to the White House, is pushing to increase detentions to 3,000 immigrants per day, which risks overloading already saturated detention centers.
According to the American newspaper Miami Herald, eleven of the repatriated individuals had been intercepted at sea near the Bahamas, probably en route to Florida. The other nine came from an ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) detention center in the United States and had transited through Guantánamo.
Another repatriation flight, carrying 61 Haitians, is scheduled for this Wednesday to Cap-Haïtien, which receives an average of one American expulsion flight per month.
This acceleration of expulsions raises serious concerns about the fate of migrants seeking asylum and about the controversial approach of the Trump administration, accused of ignoring the humanitarian implications of its decisions.
These Haitians are being sent back to a country plagued by endemic violence, where armed gangs control a large part of the territory, including the main roads. Haiti is also going through an acute political crisis, led by a government widely criticized for its laxity in dealing with the situation.
