ONASH Engages Local Authorities Through Sport for Peace and Social Inclusion in Port-au-Prince

In a national context marked by persistent security and social challenges, sport is increasingly emerging as a strategic vector for cohesion and resilience. It is with this in mind that the Haitian National Sports Observatory (ONASH), in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Civic Action (MJSAC), is organizing a three-day training seminar for eight municipalities in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince.

Under the theme « Sport for Peace and Social Inclusion », this initiative benefits from the technical support of the Haitian Olympic Committee, the Haitian Football Federation, UNESCO, and the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti. It aims to equip municipal authorities so they can integrate sport into their local public policies as an instrument of social transformation.

At the heart of these training days, several themes will be addressed, including the role of sport in preventing youth violence, strengthening social cohesion, and promoting social inclusion in often vulnerable communities. By focusing on participatory and inclusive approaches, the organizers intend to foster the emergence of sustainable local initiatives, driven by the communities themselves.

Beyond the technical aspect, this seminar reflects a clear will: to reposition sport as a tool for local governance and human development. In a country where social tensions and insecurity deeply affect daily life, investing in sport means investing in youth, rebuilding social ties, and offering positive alternatives to the dynamics of violence.

Through this concerted effort, ONASH and its partners send a strong signal: sport is not just a recreational activity, but a true lever for sustainable change. A vision that, if fully integrated and supported, could help reshape the contours of a more inclusive, peaceful, and united Haitian society.
