Pierre Espérance, sanctioned and reviled, is ultimately reduced to moral decay in Haiti

Accused of corruption, judicial manipulation, and collusion with criminal networks, the case of Pierre Espérance illustrates the impunity that prevails in the country.

The corruption allegations against him include, among others, the embezzlement of funds within the BMPAD and violent pressure on magistrates to suppress legal cases.

Despite overwhelming testimonies, Espérance remained protected by powerful networks. Why? He served as an unrepentant informant, serving anti-national foreign interests, and as a destabilizing instrument for political opposition forces eager for power.

The recent entry ban into the Dominican Republic, placing him among other criminal figures, sends a strong message in the international fight against insecurity in Haiti.

The monster is living its last moments of obscure power.

No longer having access to the new American administration, the Dominican government is now sharing information about him with the Haitian state to bring him to justice.

For the good of the country, the impending end of Pierre Espérance must symbolize a new beginning, where even the powerful must be held accountable.

True human rights institutions must reclaim the public space for the good of the entire nation.
