AMELH Questions Proper Use of 182 Million Gourdes in Public Funds for Media Campaign

The Association of Free Media of Haiti (AMELH) expresses concern over information circulating in the public sphere, according to which the Haitian state allegedly allocated over 182 million gourdes to media associations to support a campaign related to the draft Constitution. AMELH clarifies that none of its members are involved, directly or indirectly, in this initiative, « whose financial and political arrangements raise serious concerns regarding transparency, ethics, and respect for journalistic professional conduct ». Through its motto « Free Voice, Strong Press », AMELH reaffirms its unwavering commitment to press independence and professional integrity, simultaneously denouncing an attempt to instrumentalize information. In this regard, it firmly opposes the use of public funds for political propaganda.
In a note signed by Marie Swamie Rameau, interim Secretary General, AMELH disclaims any involvement – personal or collective – in any partisan approach deemed contrary to democratic principles. Therefore, it urges authorities to demonstrate responsibility and invites civil society to remain vigilant against potential abuses that threaten democratic balance and the future of press freedom in Haiti.
