The Minister of Public Health and Population, Dr. Bertrand Sinal, reviewed his recent tour of more than five days in January 2025 in the Grand Sud of the country. This visit, marked by trips to departmental hospitals and Community Reference Hospitals (HCR), allowed him to evaluate the regional health system, make immediate decisions, and announce new interventions in perspective.
The Grand Sud, facing numerous health challenges, hopes for a lasting recovery. Dr. Sinal Bertrand's official visit, conducted in collaboration with the various departmental health directorates, aimed to bring the central administration closer to the realities on the ground. From Miragoâne to Dame-Marie, including Camp-Perrin and Cayes-Jacmel, the minister held numerous discussions with hospital officials to identify system flaws while highlighting the progress made.
In the Nippes department, particularly at Sainte-Thérèse Hospital in Miragoâne and other facilities with operating theaters, the minister announced firm measures to end illegal practices, including the collection of money from patients by certain employees. At Camp-Perrin Hospital, in the South, where a reportedly deficient management was reported, the head of the MSPP indicated that corrective decisions would be taken to re-establish a more rigorous and transparent administration.
Dr. Sinal Bertrand also reported on the upcoming launch of a surgical campaign for people suffering from hydrocele in Nippes, specifying that specialists are already mobilized for this purpose. He also announced the introduction of the HPV vaccine into the vaccination program, a measure aimed at strengthening the prevention of certain cancers, including breast cancer.
In Grand’Anse, the minister welcomed the increase in the number of deliveries, which rose from nearly 50 to over 200, while in Dame-Marie, the operating theater is expected to be operational by the end of the month, with the prospect of a partnership with an organization already involved in hospital management. He also confirmed the upcoming inauguration of a health center in Duchity.
Infrastructure and Prospects
In the South, health centers in Déyè Fò, La Cahouane, and Tiburon have been connected to electricity, while the MSPP announced similar work at Saint-Michel Hospital in Jacmel in the coming weeks. While he congratulates himself on maternity services in the country, he plans to publish the report of his actions on January 24, the date marking his first year at the head of the ministry.
He plans to soon equip several hospitals nationwide. And he announced an upcoming tour in the North of the country.
