For several months, many have been asking the question: « what will happen after February 7, 2026, the date marking the end of the transitional presidential council's mandate. Faced with this question, many proposals from civil society and the political class are being discussed to avoid an institutional void after this deadline.
Among these is the August 14 Agreement, a newly created political structure. During a press briefing, its leaders unveiled an alternative to prevent the collapse of the State the day after.
«Establish a bicameral executive power (a President and a Prime Minister); set up a Transitional Citizen Assembly (ACT) composed of 33 members (3 per department), originating from 11 departmental congresses in the country's 10 departments and the diaspora», advocated the August 14 Agreement.
Its main Mission: Address major national challenges together;
Define a new governance model; Develop a 25-year societal project to ensure the continuity of the State and restore national sovereignty.
Mechanism for Selecting Transitional Leaders
The ACT will designate the President of the Transition based on equity from seven key sector personalities:
- Organized civil society
- University sector
- Religious and spiritual sector
- Diaspora
- Private sector
- Youth and citizen movements
- Women leaders
The President will submit to the ACT a list of five personalities for the position of Prime Minister.
The departmental head for the West of the August 14, 2025 Agreement, Dr. Jean Marc Dargoût, encourages everyone to join this initiative to allow the country to experience happy days after February 7, 2026.
Note that this agreement is an inclusive citizen initiative, born from various Haitian social and political structures. Its official signing was presented on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
