18th Tuesday of the Nation: The State Addresses the Relocation of Displaced Persons

Through the National Migration Office (ONM), the Haitian government is intensifying its efforts to relocate internally displaced persons and reclaim public buildings occupied for several months. During the 18th edition of the Tuesdays of the Nation, organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, this July 22, 2025, the issue of the fate of internally displaced persons was extensively addressed. As part of the national relocation program, 3,653 families will receive a support check by the end of the month to voluntarily leave temporary shelter sites. This announcement was made by Jean Négot Bonheur Delva, Director General of the ONM. The Faculty of Applied Linguistics (FLA), occupied by displaced families, has been returned to the rectorate of the State University of Haiti after the handover of 302 checks. Since October 2024, 17 temporary sites have been identified, housing approximately 23,000 people distributed among 10,000 households. The liberated spaces will be rehabilitated, particularly for the start of the school year. However, the humanitarian crisis remains severe: more than 1.3 million Haitians are displaced, and some neighborhoods, such as Carrefour-Feuilles, are still not secure. Furthermore, the MAST program, which was supposed to offer nearly 100,000 gourdes to certain families to facilitate their rehousing, has not yet progressed, as the displaced persons' sites remain occupied and many denounce the donation of this meager sum. While the State is gradually reclaiming public buildings, no neighborhood abandoned under gunfire has been officially declared secure.
