Gamall Jules Augustin, Former Director General of TNH, Arrested for Alleged Corruption

PORT-AU-PRINCE.— Haitian justice has taken a new step in the fight against corruption with the arrest of Gamall Jules Augustin, former Director General of Télévision nationale d’Haïti (TNH). Heard this Tuesday at the Anti-Corruption Unit (ULCC), he was referred to the Port-au-Prince Public Prosecutor's Office. According to the information released, Augustin faces several charges, including embezzlement of public property, abuse of office, illegal taking of interest, and falsification of official documents. These charges, described as serious, could pave the way for an in-depth judicial investigation. However, his lawyer, Me Mario Delcy, denounces an illegal arrest. According to him, Gamall answered all investigators' questions. “His transfer is outside the law.” A Busy Judicial Sequence This arrest comes in a context where the judicial system seems to be accelerating its pace. The Government Commissioner to the Court of First Instance of Port-au-Prince, Me Patterson Dorval, is currently mobilized on several sensitive cases, notably that of former senator Nenèl Cassy, whose transfer to the investigating judge's office is awaited. Furthermore, the Criminal Assize without jury assistance is scheduled to open this Wednesday, September 24, reinforcing the impression of an intensification of prosecutions in major cases that have long remained pending.
